- Neil Armstrong
- was 25 when he
- joined NASA. It is
- astonishing to note
- that at that time
- Wilbur Wright was
- not long in his
- grave. The lives of
- the first man in
- the air and the
- first man on the
- moon overlapped
- by 18 years
- #
- The first steps
- into space were
- made by the Soviet
- Union. After their
- success in
- launching the first
- satellite, they sent
- a number of dogs
- and monkeys into
- space - some were
- not brought back.
- In 1961 Yuri
- Gagarin became the
- first man to leave
- the the confines of
- planet Earth
- #
- America was
- alarmed at the
- strides being made
- by the USSR; both
- sides understood
- the strategic and
- military signifi-
- cance of the
- conquest of space.
- After Gagarin's
- triumph, President
- Kennedy vowed to
- overtake Russia in
- the space race, and
- put an American
- on the moon
- #
- Armstrong almost
- missed his moment
- of destiny. In 1966
- NASA launched
- Gemini 8 under his
- command. The
- craft had problems
- in space, and the
- space-crew was in
- serious danger
- for a time. But the
- mission showed
- that it is possible
- to dock in space, a
- technique vital for
- the moon landing
- #
- Apollo 8 was the
- last scouting
- mission before the
- landing on the
- moon. The mission
- entered the moon's
- gravitational field
- and orbited ten
- times. By the time
- Apollo 8 arrived
- home, Armstrong
- knew that he was
- to walk on the
- moon's surface
- later that year

- On July 20, 1969,
- Neil Armstrong
- stood and watched
- the Earth rise from
- beyond the moon's
- horizon. In that
- instant he was
- further from
- home than any
- man in history
- has ever been
- #
- The whole planet
- watched spell-
- bound as Neil
- Armstrong went
- about the mundane
- chores of a moon-
- walker. He picked
- up some rocks and
- dust, planted a
- flag, took some
- snap-shots like a
- daytripper and
- climbed back in
- his vehicle for
- the ride home
- #
- Armstrong and his
- fellow astronauts,
- Buzz Aldrin and
- Michael Collins,
- returned to earth
- to a heroes'
- welcome. It truly
- seemed the dawn
- of age of travel to
- the planets and
- beyond - but it
- was not to be
- #
- Now the Russians
- were beaten, NASA
- turned its atten-
- tion to unmanned
- flights to Mars
- and Venus and the
- development of
- laboratories in
- space. These
- projects lacked
- the romance of the
- manned moonshots,
- but were more
- practical and
- scientifically
- more fruitful
- #
- However deep
- humankind may
- penetrate into
- space, whatever
- discoveries are
- one day made in
- the cosmos, there
- will never again
- be a moment quite
- like the first
- small step for a
- man, the first
- giant leap
- for mankind
